A little bit about Innocenza….

Zia Innocenza and Lupa. Bari, Italy c1955

Zia Innocenza and Lupa. Bari, Italy c1955

Traditional black and white darkroom (wet) photography has been Innocenza”s passion for over 20 years. The world has always seemed better and easier in black and white. Abstracted nudes, cityscapes/landscapes, take ghostly and ethereal form when photographed with her favorite film, infrared. She has embraced all things digital, by using this technology to explore and tackle the complexities of colour. In the background Innocenza has constantly been drawing with pencil, charcoal and coloured pastels. Recently she experimented with an idea that had been fermenting for a while to incorporate her love of the darkroom and drawing together. The developer solution has now become a new medium, like ‘ink’, used on photographic paper. She has exposed photographic paper on full moons on the tide line of the ocean, lithographically printed her images onto slip cast ceramics and rolled slabs. And works slowly with her drawings to make individual pieces using different mediums.

Innocenza was born in Bari, Italy and immigrated with her family to Australia when she was only 7 months old. She completed her Certificate, Diploma and Bachelor of Fine Arts with a high distinction (photography) at the National Art School, Sydney. She also completed a Certificate of Scientific Photography (Post Technician) at Sydney Institute of Technology.

Innocenza works predominantly in the medium of wet photography, but includes digital media, drawing and ceramics in her works. Innocenza regularly exhibits her work in group exhibitions. She has been selected as a finalist in numerous art awards including the Josephine Ulrick National Photography Prize, Muswellbrook Photographic Award, Muswellbrook Art Prize, Festival of Fisher’s Ghost Art Award and Jacaranda Acquisitive Drawing Prize.

As well as her art practice, Innocenza has worked as a high school senior art assistant and after school photographic, digital imaging and drawing tutor.

Innocenza has exhibited consistently and extensively. Her work is available to purchase direct online or from Crafted - Oamaru - Facebook.
